Sally:
I can't get used to being disoriented. I feel like I ride in circles
some days. First thing this morning I turned left instead of right and
we ended up putting in a few extra miles. Got to see a huge state park
that we would've missed otherwise, and Bill figured out a way to get
back on track without backtracking, so it wasn't all bad. Except Bill
had a flat, and then another one. And then I left him patching his
tube and he had a couple more flats before getting back to camp. Not a
good morning for him. Turns out the tire blew a sidewall. Luckily the
next town had 3 bike shops and he got new tires. Unluckily he
discovered at the end of the day that they are the wrong size and he's
got to go back tomorrow. Bummer. He has more patience than I, that's
for sure. Meanwhile today was my first century ever. It was a good day
for it as it finally cooled down and rained. It's raining now in camp
and it is so nice to be cool. There was a hard shower mid-day while we
were in town and able to wait it out under cover. Didn't bother the
ride other than messy roads for a little bit. More roller-coaster
hills today, too many ups! I think it'll be worse tomorrow as we're
getting to the Ozark Mts. Oh yeah, crossed the Mississippi River today
and are now in Missouri.
Bill:
Well it's the next morning and I drove Sally to her starting point
about 13 miles away from camp. I see that she is taking the blame for
the wrong turn yesterday ... that's Sally for you . Actually, I think
I told her to turn left thinking I was one road further along.
Anyway, we got to see a beautiful and large state park and campground
called Giant City Campground as a result so it was worth the few extra
miles until the flat tires started. Decided not to do the 200 mile
roundtrip back to the bike shop after-all . This sag driver didn't
want to get that far away from Sally so have made an improved fix to
the sidewall and moved the tire to the front where there is less
weight on it. Hopefully I will find a more permanent solution on down
the road. It is really pleasant in this campground this morning in
the pines and oaks and cottonwoods. There is a small clear brook
nearby babbling away. It is cool because of the light rain last night
and there are no other sounds except something grunting in the woods.
I have no idea what it is - wild pig or turkey or something. Weird
sound. Old Wally doesn't hear it because of his bad hearing and is
peacefully sleeping nearby. He has been a real trooper on this trip in
all this heat and is enjoying the coolness too. OK now to pack up and
get on my way .
