LOBAA11 Stockton_Alabama

5/27/08 TUE CDT
LOBAA11 - Hubbard Landing Camp near Stockton, Alabama
Sally bike mileage - 94.05 miles, 6:45:38 time
Sally total - 620.6 miles
Bill bike mileage - 26.7 miles
Bill total - 256 miles
Made it to Alabama today! But first we stopped to "get our toes wet"
in the Gulf waters and ended up swimming. It was so great. Just the
right temp, super swells and it felt so perfect, even at 7:30 a.m.
Then tried to wash off the salt in the bathroom sink, good enough. It
was a super start to the day, too bad we had to leave that spot. Other
highlight of the day was the park along Mobile Bay in Fairhope. I'd
just stopped, sat on a shady bench and wished Bill was there, when
along he came! We hadn't communicated for 3 hours or so, it was a good
rest and food break. Then I proceeded to follow the title of our ride
and got lost on my bike. So I had to back-track when I finally figured
out my error. Oh well. Managed to see a Starbucks which are very rare
out here and took yet another break. Almost got lost again, but a cop
pulled up next to me and gave me the directions I needed. Don't worry,
I can always figure it out, I WILL make it home! Now we are camped in
a really neat spot with good shade, a slow river that looks like a
lake, just OK showers that get the job down and super friendly people.
In fact, the owner wouldn't take money from Bill for the night. Bill
can tell you about that!
Bill here ... I mentioned to the nice old fellow that has owned and
run this place for 50+ years that we were riding across the country
and doing the Underground RR route. He was really nice and drove me
around the campground to pick out the shadiest spot. Then I asked him
what the rate was and he said - nothing. I said "You can't do that !"
and he said "Yes I can." He apparently has really enjoyed the
bicyclists that he has put up from all over the world and tends to
give them free campsites. Just asks for a post card from us when we
are done. Real southern hospitality !

WOW, Sally, you really rode far these past few days! What I want to know is how did you take the Gulf swim pictures? Via auto timer? A sea gull held the camera? I spent the day keeping my adorable grandsons ... even took them in (well partway in) our pool. Keep those internet cafe stops coming, I love hearing of your continued adventures ... Love, from your former sag-wagon-driver- left behind- sister/cousin-Peg!
