Today we rode our bikes farther than we drove. We rode from the edge
of the of Ohio University about 18 miles to Hocking College and back.
It felt great to be back on the bikes again. The day had started out
dreary with light rain but by the time we got on the bikes the rain
had stopped. We never did see the sun but we didn't get rained on
while cycling. We rode along at a pretty good clip because the bike
path was smooth and flat. The path took us through the countryside of
Ohio in a canopy of trees alongside the Hocking River. Wildlife wise, we saw
lots of cardinals and rabbits. We had a pretty good headwind on the
way out but it was a nice tailwind on the way back. I had my first
flat of the trip but had a spare so that was no problem. On the way
back we stopped at a very small cafe called Jana's Soul Food and Sally
bought me lunch. We shared a cream cheese and artichoke on
pumpernickel bread sandwich with potatoes, coleslaw and tomato soup.
While there we called our own Jana to let her know where we were.
Sally was so happy to be on her bike again that she decided to give
her bike a name Gladys due to the gladdening effect she feels when
riding. After the ride, we hooked up with Inez and she gave us a
walking tour of the UO campus (where she works). Then it was off to
Pomeroy where I took Inez, Gretchen and Sally out for a 1 day late
mother/daughter's day dinner at The Wild Horse Restaurant which is a
great restaurant right on the Ohio River. Sally & I each had a
Margarita which really topped off the day. After dinner, we all headed
back to Amesville and then went on a tour of the countryside where
Inez's husband's family has lived for years and own about 300 aces of
land. We visited the spectacular home of one of them which was just
being completed. The craftsmanship of this self built home was amazing
with beautiful wood floors and vaulted wood ceilings and a huge stone
fireplace. The home overlooks the countryside and a large pond.
