Bill:
I am sitting in the town square in Girard, KS and we have great
internet access so I decided to get ahead of the days log. Sally just
left to ride to camp. I will catch up with her in Jimmy soon. Today
was an eventful day. we woke up to fog from last night's rain but it
cleared after a while and we had a gorgeous cool start of the day.
Because of our day off, I was able to put my new tires on the bike and
ride out with Sally this morning. We road about 6 miles or so and came
to a closed road because of high water. The water was only a foot or
so at its deepest so I walked the bike across. Sally was waiting to
see how I did and just as I got across, a pickup truck came along and
offered her a ride. We continued riding uttil the 15 mile point where
I turned around to go back and get the car. About the time I got back,
Sally called and said she had a flat but was able to fix it on her
own. Then 15 minutes later she called again to say she had come upon
another flooded road - this one was wider- several hundred yards. But
again, she got across. Then into Kansas we went and hooked up again
for lunch in Pittsburg, KS. Then on to Girard where I found this nice
little square so I uploaded more pictures and will upload this as
well. We plan to camp in Crawford State Park about 10 miles from here
- we have to cross a spillway to get to the campground but it sounds
doable. More later... . OK, they don't allow you to walk or ride bikes
across the spillway, but it was only a few inches of fast moving water
so driving is ok. We are in camp now, have had chow and are winding
down the day.
Sally:
Today was really fun. It was a beautiful morning and we got to see the
results of yesterday's storm. High water crossings were a bit of
excitement. Also had the flat and road construction and even a train
that I barely got around before it crossed the road. Back to the
flatlands. Should be able to make pretty good time, as long as the
wind doesn't blow too much. Fireflies again in camp tonight. They are
always such a surprise. A couple of memorable folks today. One was the
considerate young man who ferried me across the water in his pick-up.
The other was "Mr. Girard" An extremely talkative man who showed up at
the town square in his PINK cadillac and sat down and told us
everything you'd ever want to know about Girard, etc. But he did offer
to open his wife's beauty shop so I could use the bathroom . Very
thoughtful and I took jim up on it! He offered his yard for camping,
but we wanted to get a few more miles in, so moved on. Also had a fun
video chat with Mom, Rebecca and Peggy from the square there in
Girard. Great day.

My guess tonight is that you are at Cross Timbers State Park in Toronto, KS. Am I right?

Congrats on the Birthday Bill, the next piece of cake I have I'll make a wish for you Bill. Sally is smarter than the average bear...she'll let Bill got into the water first to see if he makes it. GOOD going Sally! Ride safe Sally and Bill!
