Sally:
Ended up riding longer than planned today. We got to our target at
1:30 and since it was just a crossroads and there was really nothing
to do there, we decided to keep going. So now we're in a regular town
with internet and restaurants (no cell phone service, though). We are
actually camping at the courthouse! The hills flattened out today,
still have them, but not so abrupt which makes it easier. Out of the
Ozarks into farmland, hay fields and cattle. Lots of dairies in the
area. Saw several deer today including doe and fawn and, of course,
turtles crossing the road. Why do they do that? It's been quite windy
since mid-morning, mostly a South wind. The day was much cooler, I was
even cold a couple of times! Next step is a solar shower and left-
overs for dinner. Then we may check out a local cafe for dessert! Hope
the traffic quiets down early this evening.
Bill:
We had planned to camp behind the little (only) store in Ben Davis, MO
but as Sally said it was too early and there were no other services
and very little shade. So Sally pressed on another 20 miles and did
another 95 mile day. I also put a few miles on my bike today testing
out my rube goldberg tire patch. It held up for 10 miles. Hope to be
near some bike shops tomorrow and hopefully I can get some replacement
tires. Instead of camping on the courthouse lawn (couldn't have set
Cramalot up there), we found a nice shady tree behind the jail. It
gives us a little more privacy. But we still have internet access - so
this news is really hot off the presses. PS to Peg - we actually
camped here to make your location guess correct ;-)

D'Anne actually...
So glad that the two of you haven't been blown away or swept away by flood waters! The heat you contended with was undoubtedly tough, but with so much bad weather in the middle of the country I was getting a little worried when you were out of Internet range.

Enjoy the cool weather while it lasts!

I been reading but I've slow on the typing. Sally your a RIGHT to complain about the bugs! They just don't understand the southern hospitality thing.
I'm so glad you guy's have gotten a to cooler place, the heat just tires you out after a while.
My childhold memories of fireflies is they are fun to catch. But, once you put them in a jar their light fades fast and you end up feeling guility for capturing them.
Sally, the reason the turtle crosses the road is to talk to the chicken!
Bill! YES you are a JIMMY and a smart one at that... to drive 200 miles to exchange tires is not worth it.
Ride safe Sally & Bill

Keep trying to figure out where you are relative to the weather - impossible. Where are the turtles going? Are they crossing in one direction or both ways? Stay away from the BIG BLACK CLOUDS!

I think turtles cross the road, then think "wonder what's on the other side" and cross the road then think "i wonder ...." etc until they get squished . Guess that's why none of them are very big !

Might be prudent (ie: safer) to do your extra day on Friday... weatherman says SE Kansas to get 1-3 inches tonight & tomorrow with thunderstorms... (I looked up Pittsburg, KS)... then looks clearer & cooler on Saturday... so where is this lodge you are staying in tonight? near the Sac River?... or the Frisco HighLine Trail? We are taking Mom to the dinner theater tonight at the Alhambra... Sound of Music is the show.
Stay Safe!... love Peg

Bill, only the small turtles walk across the road, the large ones fly!
